ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY & WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

STEM EDUCATION FOR MARINE FUTURES

MIT Sea Grant works to support and advance marine academics at the Institute, local, and state level. In addition to teaching courses at MIT, we develop K-12 programs for educators and students to introduce engineering design principles, physics, and coastal, biological and marine sciences. We have a strong commitment supporting students and interns, as well as volunteer monitoring groups, and citizen science programs.

MIT Sea Grant hosts the regional competition of the National Ocean Science Bowl and develops programs to reach underserved and minority communities in the areas of STEM and public policy. The Sea Perch program introduces students to biological science, engineering design, and physics through building remotely operated vehicles. We also provide training workshops on environmental topics and technologies to support future environmental and technical workforce needs.

GOAL

Grow awareness among the diverse population of career paths that support the needs of our coastal communities.

Increase opportunities for undergrads, grad students, and post-graduates to gain knowledge and experience in the science and management of coastal and marine resources.

Prepare a responsive and diverse workforce to advance and benefit from sectors that support coastal communities and ecosystems to adapt and thrive in changing conditions.

An environmentally literate public that reflects the diversity of our coastal communities, informed by lifelong learning opportunities.

Enable the public to engage in informed decision-making and community planning processes by providing sound information.

Develop and provide curriculum and other resources to pre-K and K-12 educators to support more effective environmental literacy education.

ACTION

Increase communication to stakeholders on ecosystem changes and affects on conservation, management, and economic, social and cultural values.
