Sea Grant and U.S. Coastal Research Program invest in strengthening resilient coastal communities

NOAA Sea Grant is pleased to announce recent investments through two complementary initiatives aimed at improving resilience with coastal communities. In response to local community needs and congressional direction, NOAA Sea Grant funded $4.2 million in resilience initiatives across the 34 university-based Sea Grant programs. The varied work includes support of resilience-focused staff to increase local capacity, engagement, research, and implementation for addressing resilience challenges.

Through this funding, MIT Sea Grant will work to build a collaborative network between academic, community and policy groups across Massachusetts to mainstream traditional ecological knowledge and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) to improve equitable adaptation and resilience outcomes for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. Research Scientist Carolina Bastidas will spearhead the work at MIT Sea Grant. All FY222 Sea Grant resilience awards may be viewed here.

Additionally, through a joint competition with NOAA Sea Grant and the U.S. Coastal Research Program (USCRP), ten new projects were selected for a total of $3.9 million in funding to translate research into application for communities.
